DA intensifies its election campaign in KwaZulu-Natal

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has intensified its election campaign in KwaZulu-Natal by bringing its former leader to engage with communities. Former DA leader Tony Leon met with the community of Woodview in Phoenix who shared some of their challenges.

Chairperson of Woodview Ratepayers Association, Theo Pillay says the community is disturbed by a local tavern that is located a short distance from a place of worship.

Pillay alleges that the tavern was unlawfully granted a licence to operate.

“Despite our public protests, we have thousands of petitions and the support of religious leaders, the church, you name them; all these organisations and the school. The liquor authorities allowed this individual to operate and in addition to that, the residents of that area cannot sleep at night. There is prostitution going on.

“They are actually using police vehicles to transport drunken individuals from the community to their houses. Police have been seen relaxing in this tavern. Residents have given information to the police. We are fighting for justice. It is our right to live in peace,” adds Pillay.

Leon has expressed his shock at how close the alleged 24-hour tavern is to the local place of worship.

“The first change that is required and we have the proof that coming from this community is that police are not doing their jobs, because even this liquor licence was granted, I think illegally and unconstitutionally. There is no way that a tavern can be allowed to operate all hours of the day and night, that prostitution occurs inside it. On any bases the tavern should be closed down… The fact that it has not been closed down is that police are not doing their jobs or they are receiving instructions not to do their jobs,” Leon explains.
