The Democratic Alliance (DA) has expressed their condolences to the friends and family of the two young Nelson Mandela University students who drowned at Sardinia Bay in Gqeberha at a Democratic Alliance Students’ Organization (DASO) event.

Two students, a male and a female aged about 19 years went swimming after the event.

The female student managed to swim to shore but she passed away while being attended to by paramedics. The male student has still not yet been found.

“This is a terrible tragedy which has resulted in the loss of life. We send our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of those who lost their lives and we keep those students who survived in our thoughts and prayers as they are suffering from shock and trauma due to the events that took place on Saturday. The university has indicated that it will communicate on the matter and obviously we will cooperate with any investigations that need to take place,” says Andre Whitefield, DA Provincial Chairperson.
