The Democratic Alliance concluded its 5th Federal Congress by electing a new leadership which will be the face of the party for the 2014 general elections. Nine people were contesting three positions of deputy federal chairperson, and federal chairperson Wilmot James was contested for his position.

The party says those who did not win elections will not be purged, but will be used according to their strengths to help in building the DA. Announcing the results, Penny Tainton says: “I am pleased to tell you that your newly elected federal chairpersons are Mmusi Maimane, Anchen Dreyer and Makashule Gana.” The DA today unveiled new members of its team. The party prides itself with having held a world class congress. It believes it was able to produce strong and versatile leadership. The new leaders say they are equal to the challenge of their new positions. James was re-elected to his position. Party Leader Hellen Zille, who was elected unopposed, says they are ready to take government from what she says is a disintegrating ANC. The party says this was the most memorable and special congress.
