DA could look at coalitions in Oudtshoorn

Reading Time: < 1 minute
The Democratic Alliance (DA) lost a lot of support at Oudtshoorn in the Little Karoo, but the party says it could still end up ruling the local council if they decide to go into coalitions with other parties.
The party went down from 14 seats in 2016 to seven seats in the 25-seat council.
The ANC gained a seat from seven in 2016 to eight.
Former DA Mayor Chris MacPherson says coalition negotiations however start at a national level, from where it moves to provinces and regions.

He says a lot of factors need to be considered before coalitions are formed.

“It’s important to note that this should not be done in an emotional manner, but that parties should sit down, discuss the issues, the positions that are involved, and all the relevant matters that are guided by the national and federal as well as provincial guidelines that have been laid down. The various parties like in Oudtshoorn where there are five parties with only one representative, it’s essential that all the parties are given the opportunity to participate in such a process.”
