DA confident in all four Chief Justice nominees

Reading Time: 2 minutes
Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen says the DA has confidence in all four  Chief Justice nominees. Steenhuisen is one of the leaders of political parties represented in the National Assembly who has given input on the nominees.
This after, President Cyril Ramaphosa submitted a list of candidates to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and the party leaders for consideration.
The deadline for party leaders to comment on the suitability of the candidates was on November 24.
The JSC has also decided that the interview process of candidates will take place in February next year after further public comment on the nominees.
The nominees are Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, Supreme Court of Appeal President Justice Madisa Maya, and Gauteng Divisional Judge President Dunstan Mlambo.

Steenhuisen says all those candidates would be suitable as Chief Justice.

“President Ramaphosa has sent us a letter asking us what our views and opinions were. The request was for the suitability of the forward candidates which he put forward. We responded that we feel all those candidates would be suitable for the Chief Justice. And we would be happy if any one of them would be appointed. I think they are all judges with a very very good track record. I think anyone for them if (he/she) should be appointed would do a very-very good job to be the next Chief Justice of South Africa.”
