The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Free State has condemned the killing of five family members at Toekoms farm outside Harrismith.

The bodies of John Twala, Sonto Maloka and their three children were discovered with stab wounds suspected to have been inflicted with a sharp object on Saturday.

The DA says the attack highlights the vulnerability of the farming community. Police investigations are still underway and no arrests have been made.

Free State DA legislator, Leona Kleynhans says the DA is shocked by the killings.

“The Democratic Alliance is shocked by the savage killing of five members of a family living on Toekoms farm outside Harrismith. The attack once again highlights the vulnerability of farmers, farmworkers, farm dwellers and their families. Rural communities are generally exposed to crime and violence due to the remote nature of their workplaces. We trust that the SAPS (South African Police Service) will get to the bottom of what exactly transpired on Toekoms farm and that the perpetrators will be brought to book for this savage deed,” says Kleynhans.
