Early LGE 2021 results on Wednesday indicate that the Democratic Alliance (DA) has emerged victorious in Phoenix, in Durban, despite the controversy of messaging on its election campaign posters in the area.

Results on Wednesday morning, which the Electoral Commission (IEC) is yet to confirm, show that the party has retained the eThekwini Municipality’s 48 and 49 wards.

Last month, the DA came under fire after it put up controversial election posters in Phoenix.

A total of 36 people were killed in the area during the July unrest.

“I think the reason why we’ve done so well here is, you know, it’s not very different from why we’ve done well elsewhere. Chatsworth, for example, we’ve done almost the same thing. All the wards there have been won by the DA. Our track record is getting better and people are starting to wake up to that reality,” says Hanief Hoosen, DA constituent agent.
