The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to abolish the National State of Disaster immediately to allow the economy to fully recover.

Party leader John Steenhuisen was delivering what he calls the ‘True State of the Nation Address’ in Cape Town.

Steenhuisen has also criticised the composition of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and some of the questions posed to judges during last week’s marathon interviews for the position of Chief Justice.

He says his party will table a Bill in Parliament to reform the JSC’s composition.

“The National State of Disaster must end and it must end right away and that is to make sure that we remove the uncertainty that still hangs over businesses desperately trying to make a come back in South Africa. Everything that we do this year must be focused on retaining and bringing back jobs and by helping businesses to survive,” says Steenhuisen.

“The state of our nation is that of ANC government failure on every single front. A party so preoccupied with fighting and clinging to power.

But amid this decay, there are islands of hope. DA governments show that things can be different.”
