The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on law enforcement authorities to formulate strategies for the protection of political candidates over this Local Government Election season.
Democratic Alliance (DA) ward 104 by-election candidate, Sinovuyo Dyokwe, was gunned down in Dunoon in Cape Town over the weekend, soon after returning from a voting station in the area.
A R50 000 reward is offered by the DA for any information that could lead to the arrest of Dyokwe’s killers.
DA Chairperson in the Cape Town Metro, JP Smith, says: “We all understand why the Political Killings Task Team was established in KZN if we are seeing widespread flare-ups of politically-motivated killings around South Africa. The national minister and the leadership of SAPS will have to formulate a strategy to dedicate resources to preventing it. What starts in July or June, already in this way across South Africa – in the Eastern Cape, in Gauteng, in KwaZulu-Natal and in the Western Cape simultaneously – if unchecked, will lead to a very violent election. That will be very disruptive, so we hope that these incidents are isolated.”
