The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it has written to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) calling for an investigation into alleged gross maladministration in the Emfuleni Local Municipality.
The municipality has been placed under administration and its Mayor Jacob Khawe has resigned. The Gauteng Treasury now intervenes directly in the financial affairs of the municipality.
The municipality which includes areas such as Evaton, Sebokeng, Sharpeville and Vanderbijlpark in the Vaal has been struggling financially.
A few months ago, Rand Water was forced to reduce water supply to the municipality due to outstanding payment. “We welcome this latest development to place Emfuleni Local Municipality under administration and also welcome the subsequent resignation of the Mayor Jacob Khawe and further to that the DA will write to the SIU calling for a probe into the gross maladministration that has plagued the municipality,” says DA Vaal Chairperson and Midvaal Mayor Bongani Baloyi.
