The Democratic Alliance (DA) has accused Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Uhuru Moiloa of failure to account for the half-a-billion rand spent on the Evaton Renewal Project.

The project located within the financially struggling Emfuleni Municipality in the Vaal was meant to improve the lives of Evaton residents through the construction of houses, roads and improved sanitation.

The DA says Moiloa told them in a written reply to a question in the Gauteng Legislature that over R200 million has been spent on the project so far.

DA member of the legislature Kingsol Chabalala says this is contrary to the Auditor-General’s 2016 figures which puts amount spent on the project at R700 million.

“When we further ask the MEC to say please indicate to us how was this R700 million was used. In which project it was used. The MEC could only account for R200 million. As the DA we are saying we will be following this up and we are saying those who colluded in managing the funds of the Evaton project renewal and corruptly benefited here, should be investigated, prosecuted and face the full might of the law.”
