D-day for Gupta brothers in India

Reading Time: 2 minutes

It is D-day for the Guptas. The Gupta brothers are expected to appear before Indian tax officials Monday in connection with a probe against them in their home country.

The Guptas have already missed two prior tax summonses.

The brothers have been summoned by Indian tax officials after their properties in India were raided last month and several documents with transactions worth millions of dollars were seized.

The Gupta brothers have been asked to appear before Indian tax officials by the end of the day on Monday.

The brothers have already missed two tax summonses- sending their chartered accountant in their place on both occasions. Last week, Income Tax department sources told the SABC that Guptas asked for one week’s extension and that time was granted to them.

Income Tax sources say that the brothers have said that they are busy and hence have been unable to make a personal appearance before tax officials.

The Income Tax department sources have told the SABC that the brothers will need to come in eventually to explain various transactions in the documents that have been seized from their Indian properties in the raids conducted last month.

If they don’t come in today, Indian officials say they will have no choice but to escalate the probe against them.

Officials are believed to be investigating money laundering charges and have already attached about 31 properties of the Guptas this implies these properties are being looked at as suspect.

This is the norm in the course of an income tax investigation.
