D-Day for water defaulting municipalities

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Friday is the deadline for 30 defaulting municipalities to pay their water bills – or face water restrictions.

The Water and Sanitation Department recently revealed that it was owed R10.7-billion in outstanding debt.

The Mbombela Local Municipality in Mpumalanga as well as the Mopani and Vhembe District Municipalities in Limpopo are among the defaulters.

“At the moment, we are in the process of finalising the kind of numbers we are looking at, but I know early around in the week we had already exceeded about 12 to 16 of the municipalities of whom we had firm arrangements and a lot of them are actually giving us commitments of actual monies to be paid,” says Department of Water and Sanitation spokesperson Sputnik Ratau.
