Based on the declared voting districts so far, the CSIR predict that South Africa’s 2019 election will see a significant decline in voter turnout from 74% in 2014 to 64%.

This means that only 17,2 million voters are expected to have cast a vote yesterday, compared to 18,6 million cast five years ago – 1,5 million less votes.

If these projections hold, this is a serious indication of voter withdrawal from electoral participation. This 10% decline is the steepest seen since 2004.
