CSIR measures social media sentiment on the local government elections

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is currently running sentiment analysis on social media data surrounding the Local Government Elections. With the data extracted from tweets with certain key terms, they are able to report on whether or not the sentiment is positive or negative.

Thompho Rambuda from the CSIR explains that a word cloud is generated from the keywords, which can then be further analysed.

“These algorithms have been tested over the years and are able to analyse whether what is said is positive or negative. Since I was a kid, I’ve loved solving challenging problems and what is great about being here, is that I am able to solve real-life problems when they come up.”
