The commission responsible for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL) has raised concern about the alarming rate of deaths of initiates in the Eastern Cape.

To date, at least 24 initiates have been confirmed to have died in the province. Next week, the commission is set to hold an urgent meeting with the MEC of Traditional Affairs, Xolile Nqatha and other relevant stakeholders in a bid to find solutions to the crisis. Commissioner Mpiyakhe Mkholo believes these deaths could be avoided.

“As a result of this, the commission has engaged the leadership of the Eastern Cape for an urgent meeting which is expected to take place sometime next week where some of these concerns will be addressed, the causes and possible remedies to protect the lives of young people who subscribe to some of these places and the cultural practice.”
