eThekwini Municipality mayor Zandile Gumede says they have laid criminal charges against soccer fans who were involved in the violence at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday night.

Gumede and stadium management held a media briefing in the aftermath of the damages caused by Kaizer Chiefs fans who went on a rampage following their team’s loss of two nil to Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup Semi-Final.

Eighteen people were injured, TV equipment and other infrastructure were damaged and a portion of the stadium torched. Gumede says the municipality has laid criminal charges with police. Gumede says the damage caused to the stadium is estimated at R2.6 milllion.

“The total estimate right now is sitting at R2.6 million. Claims are being initiated against the relevant existing insurance covers and the administrative processes are underway.”

Meanwhile, the security guard who was assaulted allegedly by Kaizer Chiefs supporters has spoken about his ordeal for the first time since the attack.

Thirty two-year-old security guard Samkelo Mazibu who has since been discharged from hospital says fans became violent after the Free State Stars scored the first goal.

Mazibu says the signs were already there but did not think they would be attacked.

“To all the people who attacked, and those thinking of doing such, that is hooliganism, it’s is childish. People must grow up. All the team’s loose. Even Barcelona and Real Mathis loose. What kind of a team when it loses innocent people are attacked? People should understand that if your team loses today. It will win tomorrow.”
