Crime a major concern in Southern Cape: Cele

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Police Minister Bheki Cele says crime is a major concern at informal settlements in George in the Southern Cape. He was campaigning for the ANC at Lawaaikamp and Thembalethu on Sunday.

Residents of Lawaaikamp say gangsterism, drugs and unemployment are the biggest problems in their communities. They are hoping the ruling party will address these issues.

A resident, GK Bodlani, says he will always vote for the ANC. “This is our liberation movement; we are not going to vote for anyone else. Many people don’t know about the struggles we faced in the past.”

Cele visited the shack of 91-year old Ellen Vena. She told him the only thing she wants is a proper house before she dies.

Cele has promised to liaise with different departments and come back to the community at a later date.

“They did raise the cooperation between police and community, that’s the reason that as a minister of police we’re committing to come back here, to work on that relationship.”

Deputy Police Minister Bongani Mkongi and Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform Mcebisi Skwatsha also campaigned in Oudtshoorn and Knysna on Sunday.
