The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) has launched its own space company, called Amaya Space, which aims to become the first fully represented South African space enterprise.

The university will also be launching a nano satellite, called ZACUBE-2, soon.

CPUT’s Director of the Technology Transfer Office, Revel Iyer, says it is critical for South Africa and Africa that a strong, African-born nano satellite company, emerges.

He says although South Africa has a few nano satellite industry players, these companies are generally not truly representative of the country’s demographics.

Iyer says none of them is being run by black South Africans, and they allegedly do not focus on employing black engineering graduates.
