COVID-19 vaccinations in SA remain far below government’s target despite Vooma Weekend drive

The Health Ministry says 18 719 COVID-19  vaccines were administered in South Africa on Sunday – and most of those were for people who are now fully vaccinated.

This comes despite the Vooma Weekend vaccine drive and is far below the 300 000 daily vaccinations target aimed at by the government.

11,5 million people in South Africa are now fully vaccinated – having received either the single-dose Johnson and Johnson vaccines or the second dose of the Pfizer vaccines.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says 11 people have died from COVID 19 in the latest 24 hour reporting period – taking the overall death toll to 88 thousand 925.

However, experts fear the real death toll in South Africa could be far higher given the large number of excess deaths recorded since the start of the pandemic.

The NICD says 300 new cases of the coronavirus were reported and that the rate of spread of the virus at this stage remains low with the test positivity rate at 1.4%.
