COVID-19 related deaths now over 90 000 in SA

South Africa has identified 13 147 new COVID-19 cases, with a total of 52 890 tests conducted in the last 24hrs.

This represents a 24.9% positivity rate.

A further nine COVID-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 90 002 to date.

Last week, Health Minister Joe Phaahla announced that the country is at the start of the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said while they are still trying to understand the newly discovered Omicron variant, what they have discovered so far is that the variant is highly infectious.

Phaahla raised concern over the sharp increase in the number of positive cases in Gauteng and he fears that the holiday season may accelerate the variant to spread to other provinces.
