COVID-19 cases in Africa tops 31 000

Africa has over 31 000 confirmed cases of COVID-19. The latest statistics from the Africa Centre for Disease Control also show that more than 1 300 people have succumbed to the illness.

More than 9 100 people have recovered.

Africa’s COVID-19 confirmed cases account for only 1% of the global numbers. There are nearly 3 million positive cases recorded across the world.

The continent’s fatality rate stands at 4,5% while 30% of patients who’ve contracted the viral infection have recovered.

Northern Africa has the highest number of cases at 12 500 with Egypt, Algeria and Morocco carrying the bulk of the numbers.

West African cases are now at more than 7 400 case and Southern Africa has reported nearly 5 000 cases. South Africa counts for more than 75% of the region’s cases. Seven more people have died in South Africa from the coronavirus (COVID-19), bringing the death toll to 86 as the number of confirmed cases increased to 4 361.

The Minister of Health, Zweli Mkhize, says that four of those that lost their lives are from the Eastern Cape, two from the Western Cape and one from Limpopo.

Mkhize said a total of 161 004 have been done in South Africa, of which 8 614 had been done in the preceding 24 hours.

The Western Cape is now the epicentre of the virus in the country with a total of 1 514 cases followed by Gauteng with 1 304 cases. Northern Cape has the least number of infections with 16 confirmed cases.

Meanwhile, health experts warn that society is still far from understanding the true extent of COVID-19 infections in South Africa. They say the number of new infections, released daily, does not show the extent of the spread of the virus in communities.
