Court to hear EFF case against IEC

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria is on Wednesday expected to hear arguments from the Economic Freedom Fighters as to why the party wants the IEC’s registration fees to be reviewed.

The newly formed political party believes that an amount of just over R600 000 which political parties have to pay in order to contest elections in all nine provinces and the national legislature, is unjust.

The case was postponed on Tuesday.

The EFF believes that the amount is unaffordable, especially for new parties which are established without funders.

It says the fees are undemocratic as they force new parties which might have a huge following from participating in the elections.

The party’s call has also received support from the PAC which is also faced with it’s own internal problems thus affecting it’s financial status.

Although the EFF has vowed to fight up to the constitutional court, time is running against the party as the IEC expects all parties to submit their lists of candidates and pay the deposit by no later than the 12th of this month.
