Court reserves judgment against Grace Mugabe

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has reserved judgment in the case against the granting of diplomatic immunity to former Zimbabwean first lady, Grace Mugabe.

Mugabe stands accused of assaulting Johannesburg model, Gabriella Engels, at a hotel room in 2017.

She avoided arrest when the South African government granted her immunity from prosecution.

Seeking legal recourse,  AfriForum,  the Democratic Alliance and the Gender Commission are asking the court to set aside government’s decision.

Their counsel argued that the court should make a pronouncement on the immunity status.

But the Minister’s legal representative told court that she didn’t confer diplomatic immunity to Mugabe but instead only recognised it.

Mugabe was granted immunity by the International Relations Minister after allegedly assaulting Engels.

Engels is adamant that the former first lady should come back to South Africa to be tried in court.
