The Department of Public Enterprises says it has not yet established how much it will cost to rebuild Unit Four of the Medupi Power Station following the recent hydrogen gas explosion.

Director General Kgathatso Tlhlakudi was updating the oversight committee on the state of financial affairs and governance issues at SOEs.

He says their recovery manager is still working on the cost of the damage. So far eight people, who were doing maintencance work on Unit Four, have been suspended.

Tlhlakudi says a big chunk of electricity generation has been lost due to the explosion.

“Once the recovery manager has completed his work we will have a sense of what is involved there what will be the impact. Each one of these units delivers about 800 megawatts so it’s a huge chunk and hopefully the recovery will happen very soon,” says Tlhlakudi.
