Labour federation, Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), has urged participants of the African National Congress (ANC)’s national congress to ensure that the integrity and legitimacy of the meeting is not compromised.

The ANC will be having its elective conference from the 16-20th of December. However, campaigns for those hoping to succeed President Jacob Zuma have been intense with seven candidates vying for the top seat.

Several allegations of corruption during the crucial branch general meetings have also been reported.

Cosatu’s Deputy General Secretary Solly Phetoe, “We wish the ANC well in its upcoming conference and hope that the conference will help mend the deepening factional battles within the ANC. What divides the ANC is not ideological contestations, but leadership contestations and we believe that the solution is to adopt ta principle that says the deputy president should succeed the president.”
