Cosatu describes Zuma’s free education announcement as drastic but long overdue

Cosatu says President Jacob Zuma’s announcement of free education is drastic, but long overdue and welcomed by the union.

Cosatu Spokesperson Sizwe Pamla says this provides the first step towards the envisaged free education for the poor, as articulated by the Freedom Charter.

Pamla says the union believes free education is feasible if wasteful expenditure and endemic corruption can be curbed.

“We look forward to engaging with the details of this when the National Treasury makes them available. We think that if we can harness all of the resources that we have as a country, we can actually provide free education and we’re looking forward to a process where social partners will be invited to really work towards the process of free education.”
