COPE to lodge complaint with SAHRC on Alex hostels

The Congress of the People says it is to approach the South African Human Rights Commission to lodge a complaint about the poor conditions at the women’s hostel in the Alexandra township, north of Johannesburg.

The party’s deputy president, Willie Madisha, and head of elections, Dennis Bloem, have been on a campaign trail to the township. Tenants of the hostel have told them that they are overcrowded.

The hostel was constructed to accommodate 2 000 women but has more than 3 000. Bloem says the women are living in squalid conditions.
In Durban, Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille took her party’s campaign trail to Phoenix, Chatsworth and Wentworth, in Durban, canvassing for voters in the strongholds of the Minority Front.

The Minority Front was campaigning in the same areas.

Spokesperson Patrick Pillay says loyal supporters have stayed with the party because they know that it protects their rights and ensures that minorities are not marginalised in terms of the legislation.
