The Congress of the People (COPE) is celebrating its 13th anniversary in Bloemfontein, in the Free State.

COPE was formed on this day in 2008 by former ANC members Mosiuoa Lekota, Mbhazima Shilowa and Mluleki George to contest the 2009 General Elections.

However, the support for the party has been declining with each election since its formation.

Leadership squabbles have fuelled the party’s electoral decline.

In 2009, after the National and Provincial Government Elections, the party won 30 seats in the National Assembly and seven in the NCOP. Now the party only has two seats in the National Assembly.
