Control – and governance – of Gauteng’s metros in the balance

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Control and governance of all 3 metros in Gauteng, the country’s economic powerhouse, hangs in the balance.

In the City of Johannesburg, with 38% of voting districts declared, the ANC leads with 34.68% support, and the DA has 25.5%. Newcomer ActionSA is poised to be kingmaker with 16.61%.

In the City of Tshwane with 23% of voting districts declared, the DA is in the lead with 35.07% and the ANC has 32.44% support. The EFF has 10.24%, which would still need co-operation from other parties to form either an ANC or DA-led coalition.

Ekurhuleni is ahead of the other metros in terms of counting progress with 63% voting districts declared. The ANC has 38.18%, with the DA at 28.74%. The EFF has 13.8%, which it could combine with the ANC for an ANC-EFF coalition or voting block which would not need other parties in order to be in control of the council.
