Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (Contralesa) is urging men to take the COVID-19 vaccine.

This follows reports from the National Health Department that fewer men are coming forward to be vaccinated against the virus in South Africa.

Contralesa president Chief Lameck Mokoena says men must lead by example.

“If you don’t vaccinate , you are causing a serious damage to your own family because you will end up being infected and your family members will be infected.  lease men, let’s go and vaccinate. Please ignore those misleading messages on social media and let’s go and vaccinate. By so doing, we’ll be leading by example.”

Health Minister calls for more men to register for COVID-19 vaccine

New Health Minister Joe Phaahla has called on more men to register for a COVID-19 vaccine, saying they have recorded a higher percentage of women having been inoculated.

“Our female compatriots are leading in coming forward to be vaccinated, 60% of the women against 40% of men. So, we again call on male counterparts to come forward and register. We also continue to vaccinate at workplaces, farms and mines and factories,” says Phaahla.

South Africa has recorded 7 740 new COVID-19 cases taking total cases to 2 764 931. The increase represents a 17.0% positivity rate.

A further 134 COVID-19-related deaths have also been reported, taking the country’s total fatalities since the pandemic outbreak to 81 595.
