Gautrain maintenance employees who are members of the National Union of Metalworkers (Numsa) have embarked on strike action.

Gautrain management says they have put in place contingency plans so that train services are not affected, and have reassured passengers of sound safety.

The issues being disputed include housing allowances and a 13th cheque.

Numsa Spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says they are scheduled to meet with management sometime during the course of the weekend in a bid to resolve the strike.
