COVID-19 contact tracing to start in the North West province

Authorities at the North West Health Department will be embarking on a campaign of contact tracing for positive cases of coronavirus in all the province’s four districts.

The campaign which will be kick started on Monday, comes as positive cases in the province are gradually increasing. The North West has so far recorded 977 cases with five deaths.

Bojanala district in the Rustenburg area, remains an epicentre with more than 500 confirmed cases.

MEC for Health, Madoda Sambatha, says contact tracing will be conducted in all the wards.

“We are going to have two shifts of contact. The first shift is going to start at eight and ends at two, the second one is starting at two and ends at ten. So that even during the night, we warn people that you are a contact of someone, please stay put where you are. We will have in each ward from next week a nurse leading a minimum of ten community health workers. Now contact tracing will be done in a ward, not this element of going abroad.”

The number of coronavirus cases in South Africa has risen to 65 736. The Department of Health says 69 more COVID-19 related deaths have been recorded, bringing the total death toll in the country to 1 423. There are now 36 850 recoveries. The total number of tests conducted in the country is over 1 million with 27 463 active coronavirus cases.
