Police Minister Bheki Cele says an increase by double digits of crime statistics are attributed to the impact of the Adjusted Lockdown Levels and distorted crime trends.
Cele addressed the media in Pretoria on the latest quarterly crime statistics which he described as dismal and needing urgent attention.
“Contact crime, sexual offences, aggravated robberies contact related and property-related crimes have recorded a never seen before double digits increase. Between April-21 to end of June 2021 5 000 people were killed in South Africa. This is 2 294 more people killed compared to the corresponding period in the previous financial year.”
Cele says contact crimes have increased by more than 60% in the country. He says cash-in-transit robberies, as well as murders, are also on the increase.
He says 10 000 victims were raped between April and June 2021.
“The crime statics of the first quarter of 2021/22 financial year are dismal. If not understood within the context lockdown levels introduced irregular variation to the crime trends. ”
