Congratulatory messages are pouring in on social media for Bafana Bafana after their shock win against Egypt on Saturday night.
South Africa blew wide open the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations after Bafana Bafana beat the hosts and qualified for the quarter finals.
With five minutes remaining, Orlando Pirates player Thembinkosi Lorch fired past goalkeeper at the Cairo international Stadium.
South Africa will take on Nigeria in the last eight.
Meanwhile, Egypt’s head coach Javier Aguirre has been sacked and the whole coaching team dismissed as the President of the Egyptian Football Association, Hany Abo Rieda, announced his resignation.
Soccer analyst, Kudjo Amankwa says, “If you look at the manner in which the goal was scored, you have to give it to them. At the end of the day, the Egyptians were at home. They were playing in the presence of their people of about 75 000 and Bafana Bafana were far away. After scoring that goal they broke the heart of each of them. The entire football association, the president of the Egyptian Football Association, Abo Rieda, has resigned.”
Amankwa says he was never surprised about SA’s win, “I was very impressed by the performance and I knew that SA was going to cause a major upset. Nigeria should be very very afraid because before the tournament started, in the qualifier of this Afcon, SA beat them. If Nigerians think it is theirs for the taking, they are going to get a wakeup call. I see SA in the semis of this Afcon.”
