Confirmed COVID-19 cases jump to 118 375 in South Africa

87 new COVID-19 fatalities have pushed South Africa’s death toll to 2 292. This as the number of confirmed cases sits at 118 375.

The Western Cape has again recorded most deaths with 53. This as the province prepares for its peak, which is predicted to be at the end of this month or early July.

Other provinces are expected to reach their peak not long after that.

The Eastern Cape follows its Western neighbour with 17 new fatalities, KwaZulu-Natal with 15 and Gauteng with two.

59 974 South Africans have beaten the virus, putting the recovery rate at 50.7%. The death rate is 1.9%.

Close to 1.5 million tests have been conducted nationwide.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has once against conveyed condolences to the bereaved families. He also thanked the health workers who risk their lives daily to fight the invisible enemy.

Winde appeals to the public

Earlier on Thursday, Western Cape Premier Alan Winde urged members of the public who are unable to self-isolate or quarantine themselves at their homes to make use of the beds at the province’s COVID-19 quarantine and isolation facilities.

“We’ve put these beds in place, if there is any doubt, please make use of those if you think that perhaps you might not be able to quarantine yourself or isolate yourself if you need to please make use of these facilities. They are there for you and they are there for a purpose. It is part of our overall plan in dealing with flattening of the curve,” he said.
