Concerns raised about unabated vandalism of road infrastructure assets

The Department of Public Works and Roads in the North West has expressed concerns about what it has described as unabated vandalism and theft of road infrastructure assets.

It says repairs and replacement costs are spiraling out of control.

Department spokesperson Matshube Mfoloe says vandalism hotspots are on a section of the multi-million-rand dual carriageway between Mahikeng and Lichtenburg in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District.

The hotspot is on a section of the road passing east of Mosiane View, Dihatshwane and Rooigrond.

The road, dubbed ‘Mandela Freeway’ is yet to be officially opened as one of the jewel projects ever undertaken by the provincial administration.

He says a steel parameter fence that government put up, at a cost of more than R10 million, to prevent accidents has also been vandalised.

Mfoloe says other planned projects may suffer because money must now be diverted to do repairs.

Thieves also allegedly stole a parameter fence on the newly refurbished road from Setlagole to Delareyville, barely 24 hours after being erected.
