Eastern Cape continues to struggle during the Easter weekend to find transport after Police Minister Bheki Cele shut routes down in an effort to curb taxi violence.

Commuters who rely on taxis travelling on the R61 between in the Eastern Cape continue to struggle with finding transport over the Easter weekend after Police Minister Bheki Cele shut routes down.

The route between Mthatha and Port St Johns and the N2 between Mthatha and Tsolo were shut down by Cele as part of an operations to curb the rampant taxi violence.

Commuter Nosihle Matyhala was confused when she arrived at the Ntlaza taxi rank, only to be greeted by empty stalls.

Matyhala said, “I came to Mthatha to do shopping. I didn’t even know that taxis were not operating. I was shocked when the taxi I was travelling in dropped me at an unusual place. Now when I came to the rank I found that there are no taxis. I don’t know where to take a taxi home. This is disturbing because I don’t know what to do now.”
