Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa says communities must use sports facilities to develop talent at grassroots level. Mthethwa officially handed over a R2 million multi-purpose sports facility at Nkgonyeletse Secondary School in Ga-Mashabela in Jane Furse in Limpopo.
A bank built the facility after Limpopo soccer club Marumo Gallants FC won the Nedbank Cup.
Mthethwa says national teams and athletes struggle to compete because there’s not much development at grassroots level.
“The facility will also go a long way in ensuring that the school becomes a hub of community sports. The learners at this school now have an opportunity to participate in at least five sporting codes because the reason where we are talking about Bafana Bafana and so on is because at the grassroots level we have not developed so much,” says Mthethwa.

Learners say the facility will enable them to follow their dreams in their favourite sporting codes.
“I’m extremely happy that the facility that was brought to our school because it will bring more opportunities to local children that are interested in sports. I’m very happy about the facility in our school yard it will develop many opportunities for other learners and candidates inside the school yard. They will benefit more because they will be professional,” says a learner.
