Communications Minister, Nomvula Mokonyane, says her department is determined to restore the SABC to financial stability and editorial credibility. She was delivering her budget vote speech in Parliament. Mokonyane says the total budget for the department is R1.5 billion.
She says the department will look at the SABC‘s public mandate, scope, size, governance and accountability to improve the public broadcaster.
“We are determined to restore the SABC to financial stability, working together with the board and the Department of Finance, editorial credibility and to being a public broadcaster of integrity that supports our objectives of social cohesion and nation building. The amount of issues require a focused discussion on the SABC in respect of its public mandate, scope and size, governance and accountability and how it can seek to get additional resources outside of being dependent on the fiscus.”
