Commonwealth observers in Lesotho for elections

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Commonwealth observers have arrived in Lesotho ahead of the June 3 elections and they will be on the ground until the 8th of June.

The group is led by Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba from Botswana, a former Commonwealth Deputy Secretary-General.
Other members come from the United Kingdom, Ghana and Swaziland.

The Commonwealth Observer Group is appointed by Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland following an invitation from the IEC and consultations with stakeholders during her visit in April.

It will assess the pre-electoral environment and preparations, the voting process, vote-counting procedures and the announcement of results.

But Scotland repeats in a statement that the responsibility for conducting credible and peaceful elections falls on the people of Lesotho.

The Group will submit its final report to the Commonwealth Secretary-General, who will share it with the Government, the IEC, political parties and other stakeholders and make it public.
