Committee chair satisfied with land issue submissions

Parliament’s Joint Constitutional Review Committee Chair, Vincent Smith, has expressed satisfaction with the response of South Africans who made their written submissions to the Constitutional Review Committee.

The committee is looking into amending Section 25 of the Constitution which deals with the expropriation of land without compensation.

The National Assembly in February adopted a motion for a Constitutional review, allowing for the expropriation of land without compensation, and referred the matter to the Joint Constitutional Review committee.

Friday is the deadline to comment on the expropriation of land without compensation.

The Freedom Front Plus said on Thursday that it would be delivering more than 100 000 submissions to the Committee.

Smith says they have received over R700 000 submissions from different sectors. “By the end of business yesterday, we had received 722 000…Freedom Front sent 101 000, COPE 248 000, I think Afri-Forum has in access of 50 000 and then the ordinary submissions in access of R200 000 – so 722 and counting…”
