There have been calls from several groups including political parties for the power utility’s current management, especially CEO Andre de Ruyter to be removed for failing to prevent recent spates of rolling power blackouts.

Replying to oral questions in the National Assembly on Thursday, Mabuza said the current Eskom leadership found plants in a poor condition in terms of maintenance.

He has expressed his full support for the current Eskom leadership saying it handles rolling power blackouts boldly.

“I am convinced that the current leadership of Eskom, and board, of course, working under pressure and duress, they are trying their best. This is the best leadership we can have that can transform and turn around Eskom,” adds Mabuza.

Mabuza says government has no plans to sell Eskom.

Mabuza says electricity prices will go down if Eskom has competition.

The Deputy President was responding to a question on his views about Eskom’s application for a 20.5% electricity increase next year.
