Coligny youth murder trial begins

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The trial of two farmers accused of kidnapping and killing a local learner in Coligny will start on Monday in the High Court in the North West in Mahikeng.

Pieter Doorewaard and Phillip Schutte are being charged with the murder of 16-year-old Matlhomola Mosweu in April last year.

The two accused apprehended the teenager for allegedly stealing a sunflower.

They insist that Mosweu jumped to his death from their bakkie on their way to the police station but an eyewitness alleges that he saw the teenager taking a severe beating and that he later died from injuries sustained during the assault.

Several witnesses expected to take to the stand.

Matlhomola Mosweu’s death was the epicentre of a violent storm that erupted in Coligny, a small town about 100 kilometres away from the province’s capital on 24 April last year.

They are currently out on a bail of R5 000 each.

They are facing charges of murder, kidnapping, intimidation, theft and the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. Doorewaard and Schuttte’s trial is expected to draw to a close by 30 March.
