Closure of Durban beaches “disappointing”

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Tourists and beach-goers have expressed their disappointment that they are not able to go into the sea at the Durban beach front.

All beaches in KwaZulu-Natal have been temporarily closed to swimmers after nets protecting bathing beaches were removed by the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board.

The board has taken this step in anticipation of a strike by its employees – set to start on Friday. The board says by law, they have to check the nets every three days. But no-one will be available to service the nets.

Although some people are disappointed, others say they won’t risk being bitten by sharks.

“We are coming all the way from Lesotho and then its really bad if we come here and find we can not swim. Because I think its part of what we are here for,” says one beach goer.

“We are here to swim nothing else. We know nothing about the sea. Myself it is the first time to come here. I’m disappointed and I’m also afraid I cant take a risk,” adds another beach hoer.
