Climate Change refugees vacate camp early

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A visit to the Climate Change Refugee Camp proved a mysterious revelation as occupants of the camp vacated the site two days before initially scheduled.

The camp, which was supposed to be operational until December 6, was serene and all quiet, featuring only a sight of the security as well as medical personnel.

Speaking to Vukile Febana, a member of the Eastern Cape branch of the Progressive Youth Movement as well as one of those vacating the camp, he indicated that something sinister was happening at the camp, but they could not put their finger on what was wrong.

Febana says since their first day at the site, no programme of action was in place. He says that at the end of the day, the camp did not reach it’s intended goals as what was expected out of it never materialized.

He claims that those staying at the camp did not even have a chance to interact and share views with their counterparts from other movements who were accommodated elsewhere at other civil society sites.

Although he is excited about taking part in yesterday’s civil society march to the Inkosi Luthuli International Convention Centre, Febana still feels that the intention was not fully exploited. He also points out that the catering at the site was in disarray.

He says their organization works in partnership with the Alternative Information and Development Centre to address youth unemployment research issues.

One of the visible sights at the site was the ER24 tent. An ER24 medical services Manager says numerous minor injuries were reported at the site. He couldn’t go into detail as to the casualties, citing protocol, but assured that his troops will be stationed at the camp until December 6.

Sharks Protection Services, who keep a watchful eye on day to day events at the camp, say the refugees stay went without incidents.
