Cleric and struggle stalwart Allan Boesak says the economic policies of the current government are at variance with the ideals of former President Nelson Mandela.

He was speaking at the Nelson Mandela Release Debate which was held at the Drakenstein Correctional facility to rekindle memories of this world-renowned struggle icon.

Dr Boesak says Mandela genuinely aspired for a better life for all South Africans especially the poor.

The event coincides with the day Madiba was released from prison 32 years ago after he had spent 27 years behind bars.

“One of the things that Nelson Mandela was clear about is that in the economic policies of the ANC government is that it would reflect the ethos of the Freedom Charter, the Constitution must reflect the Freedom Charter, we must make the Freedom Charter a living document into our way of life, into our way of thinking.”

The Nelson Mandela Museum in Mthatha is celebrating its 22nd anniversary and coincides with the 32nd anniversary of his release from prison:
