Class action lawsuit against Tiger Brands on the cards

A South African law firm says it will invite victims of the listeriosis outbreak to sue the owner of the factory named as the source.

Attorney Richard Spoor confirmed on Monday they would file a class action suit against Tiger Brands.

The company is currently under the spotlight after its cold meat-cutting and packing factory in Polokwane was identified as the source of the outbreak.

At least 183 lives have been claimed by the outbreak and it is the largest epidemic of its kind in the world.

Lawyer with Richard Spoor, Thami Malusi says, “Since Richard has announced publicly that we will be taking on the class action, so we have been getting quite a lot of people calling in wanting assistance. We covering everyone across all spectrums, not only people that have suffered personally but also people that are relatives of victims that not only died, some have died but some that are still alive.”

South Africa’s poultry producers association says it’s worried that the country is accepting imports of untested mechanically deboned chicken meat amid the worst Listeriosis outbreak in the world.

The association says reports about corruption and the evasion of food safety checks in the Brazilian meat and poultry industries are a continuing concern for South African consumers.
