City of uMhlathuze’s newly appointed mayor resigns

The City of uMhlathuze’s newly appointed mayor has resigned. Dr Nkonzoyakhe Donda of the Inkatha Freedom Party was elected unopposed as mayor last month after the African National Congress staged a walk out.

UMhlathuze municipality spokesperson Mdu Ncalane explains…”Municipal Manager Lulamile Mapholoba has received  the resignation letter from Councilor Donda.

The municipal manager is following all due processes to effect the resignation. Mapholoba has also confirmed that a special council meeting is scheduled for this Friday to further process this matter. Councilor Donda remains an ordinary councilor within the City of Mhlathuze.”

In November coalition talks for hung uMhlathuze Municipality were in process. This after the African National Congress (ANC) failed to obtain an outright majority in the uMhlathuze Municipality, only receiving 27 seats in the council on the ground.

Voters pressed mixed feelings about the elections and their new leadership. 

“Yes, I’m very happy and I feel there will be a big change,” says one voter.

“I’m disappointed with my vote. I feel that my vote could have gone a different way,” says another voter.

“I’m very happy because there will be change since a new party will take over,” says another voter.

The African National Congress (ANC) failed to obtain an outright majority in the uMhlathuze Local Municipality, only receiving 27 seats in the council, meaning a coalition is on the cards.
