The City of Johannesburg Emergency Services is urging residents to exercise extreme caution with open flames and heating devices as winter arrives.

The service’s Robert Mulaudzi says three people, including two boys aged three and seven, died in two separate fires in Soweto over the past weekend.

“Two young brothers lost their lives on Saturday morning and two other people sustained minor injuries and suffered smoke inhalation. On Monday morning one female adult lost her life during a fire incident in White City and three other patients sustained minor injuries and also suffered smoke inhalation.

“We just want to urge all our residents throughout the city of Johannesburg to look after their heating devices which might cause fires at home so that we are able to prevent fire incidents this winter,” says Mulaudzi.
